CLARITY VS. ACCOMMODATION
The Leadership Choice That Shapes Culture
Leaders often face a moment of decision after a mistake. An employee is late. A deadline is missed. A process breaks down.
In that moment, many leaders choose accommodation. They say, “It’s fine,” and move on. On the surface, this feels kind. It avoids tension. It keeps the interaction smooth.
But accommodation has a cost.
When an issue is smoothed over without discussion, the behavior usually repeats. The rest of the team absorbs the impact. Deadlines shift. Work piles up. Quiet resentment grows.
Clarity offers a different path.
Clarity acknowledges the mistake without shaming the person. It names the impact and creates a plan for change. It might sound like this:
“We all make mistakes. How can we make sure this doesn’t happen again? Being late impacts the team. Let’s set a boundary moving forward.”
Clarity is not cruelty. It is direction. It gives the person a chance to improve and understand the seriousness of the situation.
Accommodation protects feelings in the moment. Clarity protects the culture in the long run.
Leaders who choose clarity consistently create teams that trust expectations and grow from feedback. Leaders who rely on accommodation often find themselves frustrated and burned out.
The question is simple: are you being nice, or are you being clear?
